The newest season of the Walking Dead has been an intense roller coaster of events. As a reader of the comics, I am watching the show as a completely different entity, enjoying most of the liberties they have been taking with the storylines (Dale, Shane, Sofia..). However, there are a few differences that I am having issues with.
First off, Lori. That episode where she died wrenched my soul to the point where I was sad for three days and was afraid to watch the next episode…I’m not upset so much that she died, I knew that was coming. It was the way that she died that I have an issue with. Childbirth in movies and television is always hyped up (with the mother going into labour at the most inopportune times like at the start of an alien invasion, or when zombies are giving chase..). The show certainly made her death heroic and I thought it was very well done, BUT, considering that she was killed by a gunshot in the comics, I think that death by medieval c-section was necessary. The host of Feminine Frequency makes an excellent point about childbirth verging on torture porn, which I wholeheartedly agree with.
Another issue I have is with Andrea. In the comics, she a gun-toting, no nonsense taking gal which somehow the writers of the show have forgotten and instead turned her into a woman who seems to be into anything with a penis and pulse. It is extremely disappointing that they ruined one of the few strong female characters they had to work with. And right now with Michonne being such a party pooper, there are no really great, strong female characters on the show even though these two have such great potential.
I am certainly waiting to see what happens with the rest of the show before I come to any conclusions but hopefully Michonne will be given more of an important role and Andrea will stop flirting with EVERY guy she sees. I know its been a while since you’ve gotten any but, chill.
