Check out Jeffrey Thomas’s portfolio on Tumlr. He has a few renderings of some popular Disney Princesses doing not so typical things.

As much as I love Disney, the whole Princess phenomenon is kind of sickening when you really think about it. Teaching young girls to hold out for their strong, WHITE knight to come save her why she stands by hopelessly is not cool.

I have no problem with small girls (or big ones!) with pretending to be Princesses. It’s when they don’t realize that in their play, they get to run a frickin kingdom! Instead, they squander all that potential, imaginative power and sit around waiting for their handsome Prince.

My only hope is that they watch The Young Victoria or the Elizabeth movies to see what a real Princess can achieve…like becoming a kickass Queen.

About Mighty Damsels

I am a sick and tired nerd. Male characters have dominated the action/sci-fi/fantasy genres for far too long. No more will women be in distress, cast as the "girlfriend" or made to wear tight leather pants. Ladies! Raise up your swords, M16's, phaser guns and pens!

  1. Levy says:

The princess in Fable 3 is pretty cool, too. Sure it’s not as good a game as Fables 1 and 2, but leading a rebellion to overthrow your power hungry brother? (Despite the story being gender neutral throughout, with very little change depending on the character’s gender.)

Perhaps that’s not a good example, but that’s the first princess I could think of that royally kicked ass.
