Upon doing research for female roles in entertainment I came across a particular viewpoint that changed my way of thinking. It was from a comment that a person made that put forth the idea of creating more female characters in general, not just bad ass leads.

It makes sense, and certainly in a few of my stories that I have written contain a plethora of women.

It is a similar phenomenon that has happened in shows such as the L Word, Queer as Folk etc. that complaints are being made that certain subgroups of the gay community aren’t being shown. The same could be said for any number of shows ie. Friends (who really looks like that?). If more women in general were portrayed in movies such as horror, sci-fi and action then people wouldn’t be so shocked when a woman is cast in said genres.

If a woman is cast in a role for these movies, she is usually the only one which defines her role as “the girl” or “hot girl”.

You know those movies that have that one female character who shocks everyone by being able to do certain cool, manly things? It’s like the creators are saying, “look! This ONE female is awesome because she can do ___!” when it shouldn’t be a shock that a woman can do these things.

I imagine a world where people create characters, not men and women, but characters to carry out non gender specific roles. Ideally I wouldn’t have this blog as women would be present in every genre as often as men and not be defined by her feminine traits. That is a world I want to live in.

One can dream.

About Mighty Damsels

I am a sick and tired nerd. Male characters have dominated the action/sci-fi/fantasy genres for far too long. No more will women be in distress, cast as the "girlfriend" or made to wear tight leather pants. Ladies! Raise up your swords, M16's, phaser guns and pens! Mightydamsels.wordpress.com

Whoah, site redesign. I just forgot what I was going to say.

Ah, I thought of something else to add, though. The way you said “It’s like the creators are saying, ‘look! This ONE female is awesome because she can do ___!'” made me realize that this is even more demeaning than it is meant to be. It means that the character is not in a norm. Like she is a special exception to some unspoken rule where she broke out of a confined role and can now be the only badass while the rest are left in the fray. Not sure how much sense that really made, thinking out loud here.

Let’s look at the recent Avengers film as en example, she was the token female of the group, a female super ninja spy, while three others in the group were pretty much immortals, The Hulk, Thor, and Ironman. (To be completely honest, I forgot that woman’s name as she never really contributed much to the story and she was just eye candy). Of course, Hollywood is trying to keep things realistic in a sense, there can’t be a 50×50 when it comes to characters, that wouldn’t be realistic, and they also can’t throw in a movie with four female leads and one male lead, it would be like a harem at that point.

I want to see characters of equal strength to the male characters. I want to see a sort of Ironwoman that can kick Ironman’s ass and is intellectually equal and perhaps has the same libido as well, well that might be too predictable then, but you get my idea. Maybe go a whole other route. What about a movie about the most successful pirate of all time? Ching Shih. Now there’s a movie that could make it big.

Hell, I would even like to watch an ultra realistic sci fi film set in the most distant future where the Y chromosome is nearly finally degraded and the human race is only female, making men less than 25% of the population and where science has long since allowed humans to merge gametes from two women to make a fertilized egg, ridding the need for the male species completely. Sounds almost like Gattaca in a sense. (Though, I’m sure Hollywood would fuck up that idea and make it into a fan service movie.)

    • Haha, I thought it was time I changed the look now that I’ve gotten more comfortable with all this website mumbo jumbo.
You make some excellent points as per usual, and the name of the character in the Avengers is Black Widow.
